Both cards worked fine but after an upgrade the CA was unable to play sound. I am certain this is not a hardware problem as I am running a dual boot with XP and the sound works fine on XP. It got everything working.
I have tried tinkering with the alsamixer but that did not work. I've run through many of the sound problem troubleshooting tutorials that laba have written.

Just to add some additional info here. It was gnome-alsamixer that led to me finding hlaster, as it was a tick box, I unticked it which mutes the channel and hey presto started working. I only get sound from the CA Soundblaster option.
